Department Announcements News to report on the budget cuts for next school year!Dr. Blanch came to our school to answer questions on Thursday December 3rd. There was also a work session meeting of the Board of Education on Thursday night.
Dr. Blanch confirmed that one of the scenarios to help balance the budget is to relocate Grace Best to Creekside Middle School. The Grace Best Elementary building would be put on low pulse until needed again. Grace Best is in need of costly maintenance estimated at $3 million. The cost of relocation is an estimated $200,000 to included playgrounds. It was also stated that the school name typical stays with the building.
With the relocation of Grace Best to Creekside, we hope to draw back some of the over 300 students that currently do not attended Grace Best. There would also be a transportation saving with the relocation of Grace Best.
And the best news of all, Dr. Blanch said our principal will remain with us! The Grace Best community has responded with a sentiment of, we don't care where we will be located as long as the staff and principal goes with us.
The district model will be modified to run more efficient. All elementary schools will become K-6. By going to K-6, we might be able to provide more specials such as foreign language or strings at the elementary level. A combined 7th and 8th campus would be located at Lewis Palmer Middle School, with a possible increase in subjects taught by each teacher. This could lead to the potential of offering more advanced courses or foreign language opportunities. The high schools will remain as two campuses with a possibility of changing schedules. Furthermore, the school boundaries would not need to be adjusted for the new models.
I feel this is a positive way to distribute the 12% budget shortfall throughout the district. These changes will continue to help us with the additional budget shortfalls of $1 million for the two subsequent school years after the relocation.
The decision will be made as soon as December 17th at the regular Board of Education Meeting. The district wants the budget decisions made before open enrollment starts in mid January.
Please come to the upcoming meetings. See the district calendar for the schedule.
